KEW GARDENS — An Elmont, L.I. man accused of shooting and paralyzing a linebacker at St. John’s University was on trial again Monday on charges he shot his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
The prosecution and an attorney for Christopher Prince, 24, presented opening arguments in State Supreme Court in Kew Gardens in his attempted murder trial.
Prince is charged with shooting the father of his girlfriend’s baby in St. Albans last March, when he was out on bail, Brown said.
Two juries have deadlocked over whether Prince shot into a crowd of students on the St. John’s campus in March 2001, when football star Corey was shot and paralyzed. Another student was hit in the leg.
JACKSON HEIGHTS – A woman sustained leg injuries after jumping from the window of her fourth-floor apartment Sunday morning in a fire, published reports said.
A Fire Department spokeswoman had no information on the woman’s reported jump. The fire at 37-33 83rd St. was called in at 6:59 a.m. and brought under control at 7:25 a.m. Five people were hospitalized, said the spokeswoman.
EAST ELMHURST – A 25-year-old man was shot once in the leg and a 24-year-old man was shot twice in the chest about 4:20 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The shooting occurred during a dispute outside 94th Street and 23rd Avenue, police said. The 25-year-old was in stable condition and the 24-year-old was in critical condition at Jamaica Hospital, police said.
There were no arrests in the ongoing investigation.
ELMHURST — Three Queens residents and two others were arrested Friday for their alleged involvement in a major Asian counterfeit import ring that brought fake cigarettes, designer clothes, luggage and handbags into the country, police said.
After an eight-month joint investigation by local, state and national agencies, Hu Xiaobei, 32, of Forest Hills; Ma Yu Dong, 35, of Elmhurst; and Hu Li Wi, 36, also of Elmhurst were arrested, police said. One Taiwanese man and one Chinese man were also apprehended, police said. All five have been charged with trademark counterfeiting, police said.
SOUTH JAMAICA – A 20-year-old man was shot once in the buttocks by an unknown assailant March 17 in front of 141-16 Rockaway Blvd., police said.
The victim was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition, police said. There were no arrests in the ongoing investigation.
CORONA – A two-month-old girl was found dead by her mother Friday afternoon, police said.
Marlene Azcatel was found dead at home at 55-21 97th St., police said. The preliminary investigation indicated no signs of criminality, police said.
The medical examiner was determining the cause of death.
CORONA – A 22-year-old woman jumped onto the tracks in front of a northbound No. 7 train at the Junction Boulevard station Sunday night, police said.
The woman was removed from the catwalk alongside the train and taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, police said.
REGO PARK – A firefighter was arrested on drunk driving charges March 17 at 63rd Avenue and Queens Boulevard, police said.
Firefighter Thomas Sullivan, 37, is assigned to Marine 1 in Manhattan, the New York Post reported. There were no injuries.
ST. ALBANS – A 15-month-old boy was found unconscious by a family member Sunday night, police said.
Alex Grandison was pronounced dead a short time later at Mary Immaculate Hospital, police said. There were no signs of trauma and the medical examiner was determining the cause of death, police said.
MASPETH – A 34-year-old woman was shot in the back during a domestic dispute with her husband Tuesday night, police said.
The woman was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in serious condition, police said. James Vasquez, 36, of 60-24 54th Pl. was charged with attempted murder, police said.
JACKSON HEIGHTS – A teenage girl was burned when her pants caught fire on an E train at the Roosevelt Avenue station, published reports said.
A hairpin or hairclip sticking out of a heater under a seat on the train caused the fire, the reports said.
LONG ISLAND CITY – A man was shot once in the head at 4:40 a.m. Sunday and was pronounced dead less than an hour later, police said.
The 21-year-old man, Kaleef Riley of Huntington Station, L.I., died at Cornell Hospital after being shot at 21-11 Queens Plaza North, police said.
There were no arrests in the ongoing investigation.
LONG ISLAND CITY – A swastika was found on a wall of a residential building in the vicinity of 45th Street March 17, police said.
No arrests were made in the ongoing investigation.
