St. John’s freshman hurler Matt Tosoni was named Big East Pitcher of the Week, helping lead the Red Storm baseball team to a series win at Boston College last weekend.

After taking the win in a split at No. 9 Notre Dame April 12, the Canadian southpaw gave up one run on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks in a 7-1 win over Boston College Saturday.

Tosoni is now 3-0 with a 2.83 earned run average for St. John’s, which improved to 20-13, 9-4 in the Big East.

After splitting a doubleheader Saturday, the Red Storm rallied to a 5-4 win in the rubber match Sunday as Chris Joachim belted a two-run home run in a three-run eighth inning for St. John’s.

Closer Craig Hansen allowed one hit in two innings to earn his fourth save of the year. Anthony Varvaro improved to 4-1, giving up four runs — two earned — on five hits in seven innings.

After hosting Villanova in a conference doubleheader Friday, St. John’s is home for two critical games against Rutgers Sunday. First pitch at The Ballpark at St. John’s is slated for noon.

St. John’s 7, Boston College 1. Joe Burke was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Eddie Schultz went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Jim Martin and Blake Hershelman each scored a pair of runs in the nightcap of a doubleheader.

Boston College 4, St. John’s 2. Big East Preseason Pitcher of the Year Chris Lambert allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits, striking out six, and walked four to improve to 3-3 for Boston College (14-19, 5-5) in the opener of the doubleheader.

Queensborough 15, Borough of Manhattan CC 0. Frank Terzo was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and four RBIs, Anthony Gonzalez was 2-for-3 with a triple, three runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI, and Felipe Martinez allowed two hits through five innings, striking out five with three walks for Queensborough (12-20, 5-3 Region XV) in the nightcap of a doubleheader Sunday.

Queensborough 11, BMCC 3. Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk, Martinez went 2-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored, and Terzo allowed three earned runs on four hits, striking out five with three walks in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Dowling 7, Queens College 2. Chase Muratore went 3-for-4 with a run scored, and Vinny Garelick had two hits and an RBI for Queens (4-16, 3-11 NYCAC) at Dowling Sunday.

Softball

Pittsburgh 4, St. John’s 3. Tami Hill and Allina Sainz were each 2-for-4, and Christina Tucker went 3-for-4 for St. John’s (18-18, 4-4 Big East) in the second game of a doubleheader at Pittsburgh Sunday.

Pittsburgh 2, St. John’s 1. Sainz drove in the lone Red Storm run, and Courtney Fitzgerald allowed a pair of earned runs in 6.2 innings to fall to 9-2 in the opening game of a doubleheader.

Queens College 8, Southampton 2. Jessica Blake was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored, Crystal Wilson was 3-for-4, and Victoria Forsythe allowed eight hits and two earned runs while striking out four for Queens (16-15, 9-7 NYCAC) in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Queens College 2, Southampton 1. After Wilson drove in Jessica Henck to tie the game in the fifth inning, Erin Lynch scored on a bunt by Henck in the sixth inning, while Jessica Paparella scattered six hits for her ninth win of the year in the opener of the doubleheader.
