City Councilman Hiram Monserrate (D-Corona) said Wednesday that government agencies should revoke hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax breaks going to a Flushing landlord who has about 7,000 housing code violations in Queens.
“Nicholas Haros is in the business of making money off of his tenants' suffering,” he said.
Monserrate said Haros, who manages 81 buildings in Queens and the Bronx, was operating his buildings with gaping holes in the ceilings and floors, unhealthy plumbing leaks and vermin infestations.
The councilman met with building residents and tenants' activists at an apartment building owned by Haros in Jackson Heights and toured several other problem buildings. He also sent a letter the same day to the Department of Housing Preservation and Development asking them to take away his subsidies unless he complies with the intent of city rules.
