Finalists vie for Willets Point site

New redevelopment plans for the Willets Point “Iron Triangle,” to be built next to a proposed new Shea Stadium, have been narrowed down to eight finalists, by the city’s Economic Development Corp. (EDC).
The winning plan will contain a combination of such projects as a hotel and exhibition center, quality retail and entertainment projects, with space for community organizations and cultural institutions.
The proposed business zone, known as the “Iron Triangle,” is a 13-block, triangular-shaped 75-acre area bounded by Willets Pt. Blvd., Roosevelt Ave., 126th St., and Northern Blvd. It features heavy construction companies; auto-body and repair shops; a sawdust factory; plus towing and junk yard businesses that operate along one mile of dirty streets, devoid of sidewalks.
Willets Point and the surrounding neighborhood present challenging, but potentially highly rewarding, development opportunities,” said EDC President Andrew Alper. Proposals are due to be submitted by May 5th.
The EDC has met with Willets Point businesses, and a comprehensive Business Assistance and Workforce Development Program is being finalized to assist the 80 businesses and 2,000 workers that may be affected by the redevelopment.
