The New York State Senate and Assembly have given people another way to memorialize the 9/11 attacks by passing a bill creating “September, 11, 2001 Remembrance” license plates.
“It is wholly appropriate that we remember and honor those who perished with a distinctive plate in commemoration of September 11, and I applaud my colleagues for unanimously approving this measure,” said Senator Malcolm Smith, a co-sponsor of the bill, which now has to be signed into law by Governor George Pataki.
The license plates, which can be purchased through the Department of Motor Vehicles, have an annual fee of $25. Of the annual funds, 80 percent will be donated to the World Trade Center Memorial Scholar Program.
“Since 9/11, New York has proven to be a resilient city and a resilient state. But we will never forget what happened at the World Trade Center,” Smith said. “These commemorative license plates will serve as a vivid reminder of the lives lost, the courage found, and the sacrifices made. That most of the proceeds of these plates will fund scholarships for the families of the victims of September 11 sends a powerful message that they have not been forgotten.”
