NYPD Welcomes New Recruits

This December, 1,511 new police officers will be joining the rest of New York's Finest in the precincts. The New York Police Department (NYPD) recruits were the second class to be sworn in this year by Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Brooklyn College.
Before being assigned to precincts throughout the five boroughs, the recruits will spend several months training at the Police Academy. Once they graduate, the new officers will be assigned to various commands throughout the city, such as the Patrol Services Bureau, Housing Bureau, and Transit Division.
&#8220Today you join a Police Department that has distinguished itself as being the national leader in reducing crime. I'm confident that today's class will continue to serve this city well and will use the training from the Police Academy to continue to make America’s safest big city even safer,” said Bloomberg.
During their time at the Police Academy, the recruits will undergo a combination of academic and physical training, according to the NYPD's Deputy Commissioner of Public Information, Paul Browne.
&#8220The academic training focuses a lot on law,” said Browne. &#8220Physical training involves self defense and firearms training, as well as instructions for counter terrorism issues.”
