For more than 30 years, the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center, a non-profit health care facility, has provided care and comfort to Asian communities in both Manhattan and Queens. With four centers - three in Manhattan and one in Flushing - these health centers strive to meet the needs and concerns of its surrounding communities.
On Saturday, August 5, the Flushing center, located at 135-27 37th Avenue, hosted its fourth annual Good Health Day Fair where more than 55 organizations participated in the event, including several local pharmacies, the Queens area office of the American Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society.
Participants in the Health Fair included over 2,000 community members and the presence of City Councilmember, John Liu. The event featured 60 activities booths and provided free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, and glaucoma. Kids received screenings in height, weight, BMI, and blood pressure. The American Red Cross Chapter distributed emergency preparedness information in both Mandarin and English, and representatives spoke with attendees about health and safety issues associated with storms, power outages, and the ongoing August heat.
“This is the first year that the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center ran a four-language simultaneous translation system during both speeches and announcements. Languages included: Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and English,” explained Outreach & Marketing Coordinator, Christine Lin.
