Honoring higher education

The Beta Omicron Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa held its Eighth Citation Achievement Awards Scholarship Luncheon.
The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa is a professional organization of women in the field of education. There are 136 chapters of the sorority in this country and two international chapters in Liberia and Barbados.
The Beta Omicron Chapter, which was chartered in 1957, has been operating the Ruby S. Couche “Big Sister” Education, Action and Service Center on Merrick Boulevard since 1968. They provide tutorial homework assistance, workshops for parents, pregnancy prevention programs, youth leadership awareness and senior cultural and recreational programs.
Guest speaker Councilmember Leroy Comrie, always a staunch supporter of the importance of education, congratulated the sorority for its work on behalf of generations of youngsters who have grown up in southeast Queens and their scholarships which make it possible for young people to pursue higher education.
