Awaiting autopsy in baby’s death

Police are awaiting the final autopsy report on a one-week-old baby boy found stuffed in a bag in a Maspeth closet.
In the early hours of Sunday, May 6, an unidentified woman arrived at Elmhurst Hospital with her 15-year-old daughter and the baby, who was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to published reports, the girl had given birth about a week earlier, stuffed the baby into a bag and hid it in her closet. Reports say that the girl returned to the closet to hold the baby several times before an unpleasant smell led the woman to the gruesome discovery.
Hospital workers immediately notified police, and the girl was admitted to the hospital, where her condition was reported as stable as of Tuesday, May 8.
There is no information as to why the girl concealed her pregnancy or the birth of the baby, or why she decided to keep the body in the closet.
According to a spokesperson for the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office, an autopsy was performed on the body of the infant on Monday, May 7, but initial findings “were inconclusive.” The office is awaiting further test results. The spokesperson told The Courier Sun that the results were likely to take a week to 10 days.
Neither police nor hospital officials will release the girl’s name because of her age. Cops have questioned the girl and her mother, but are awaiting the Medical Examiner’s report before taking further action.
