Students walk to give back

P.S. 26Q Student Council members Joan Lee, Grace Choi, Zeinab Saleh, Jasmine Perry, Gina Lee, Meagan Dizon, Justin Kim, Kuba Legun, Katie Mazalkova and Matthew Lish (left to right) carried the opening banner for the school’s Walk-a-thon: Kids Helping Kids One Step at a Time. Diane Colon (fourth from right) and Susan Suarez (second from right) of the Briarwood Family Residence, also attended.
The entire 700-member student body of the school in Fresh Meadows participated in the walk recently, raising money for children of the Briarwood Family Residence, a family shelter in Jamaica.
The theme of this year’s event was physical fitness, and once funds from the walk are counted, the students plan to buy gym equipment, sneakers and summer camp supplies for the shelter.
Last year, P.S.26Q donated 40 duffle bags filled with camp supplies to the Residence. The fundraising will continue for several weeks.
“We will never forget the warm response we received from the administrators and children of this residence. They were so appreciative of our efforts,” said P.S. 26Q Student Council Advisor Dolores Kapica.
