York med hopeful wins Salk scholarship

A York college pre-med student is one of only eight CUNY graduating seniors to win a prestigious Jonas E. Salk scholarship this year, according to Chancellor Matthew Goldstein.
Angela Hopkinson is the college’s third Salk Scholar in three years; following Max Saenz in 2006 and Fiona Smith in 2005. The Salk Scholarships will be awarded on May 15, 2007, in a ceremony starting at 9:30 AM, at Baruch College’s William and Anita Newman Conference Center, 151 East 25 Street.
Hopkinson left her native Guyana to pursue her longstanding interests in understanding disease processes. At York College, she was recruited to Dr. Louis Levinger’s lab where she has worked since 2004 and where she currently serves as a research technician.
Her oral and poster presentations have garnered awards at the RNA Society of North Carolina and the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students. She has also served as co-author on two papers that have been accepted for publication.
After graduating from York College with a degree in biotechnology, Hopkinson will pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan Medical School.
“This is an extraordinary achievement for these students and York College,” said President Marcia V. Keizs, “and a testament to the importance of the personal, one-on-one mentoring they received from our distinguished faculty.” The Salk Scholars are selected by distinguished physicians, all Salk Scholar alumni, based on the quality of their research, academic excellence and recommendations by professors and mentors.
