Arrest In Cemetery Assault And Robbery

A 36-year-old man was arrested and later charged for allegedly assaulting another man as he paid a visit to Mt. Hebron Cemetery.
The suspect, Jose Santana, of 86-06 35th Avenue in Jackson Heights, allegedly struck a 38-year-old man in the arm with a shovel on Sunday, July 1. He then took $50 in cash from the victim before fleeing westbound across the Van Wyck Expressway into a lake in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park.
After canvassing the area, the NYPD's Aviation Unit apprehended the suspect in the lake's weeds.
A police department spokesperson said that their response and quick arrest was standard procedure.
The victim suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
Santana has been charged with robbery, assault, endangering the welfare of a child, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal trespass, petit larceny and resisting arrest. He was arraigned and was held on $100,000 bail.
