Anthony’s Restaurant still retains its old world charm but, a new kick has been given to its menu by offering alligator, buffalo, kangaroo and other exotic meats on different days. Executive Chef and owner, James Bianchi, says he has customers who call to find out when these special meats will be served.
Since it was available the night we were there, we ordered the alligator appetizer; tender, fried, bite-sized pieces of meat served with a salsa. Our other appetizer was the more traditional Escargot stuffed with garlic butter into their shells.
As we enjoyed our appetizers and perused the wine list, we noticed that since our early arrival on a mid-week evening, the tables were beginning to be filled. Bianchi explained that he has built up a steady clientele of family groups and others as evidenced by a nearby table of 12 of all ages from seniors to youngsters. Even with the tables filled, the service was very attentive as Bianchi, Maitre d’ Fabio and formally attired server Delfo all paused at tables to take orders, serve food or just make conversation.
For those who prefer even earlier dining, Anthony’s has an Early Bird Special from noon until 4:30 Monday through Friday ($13.95) which includes three courses: appetizer, entr/e and dessert with coffee or tea. In addition, available seven days a week - except on holidays and for more than six people - is a Prix Fixe dinner also with three courses but with a different menu. Prix Fixe on Sunday - Thursday is $23.95 and on Friday and Saturday is $25.95.
Maitre d’ Fabio listed the specials for the evening and assisted with deciding on the pasta course. For pasta, he suggested we share the fusilli with grilled chicken, broccoli, garlic and fresh tomatoes ($14.95). From the Special Entrees, my partner chose the Tilapia almondine with broccoli and a sprig of mint ($21). My choice was one of my all-time favorites, Osso Buco ($29.95), a classic veal dish. For the wine to accompany the entrees, Fabio suggested a glass each of Chianti (red for the meat) and Coronado Pinot Grigio (white for the fish).
The made-to-order pasta arrived piping hot and in such quantity that we were forced to only sample it in order to save room for the rest of the meal. For someone dining alone, it could make a complete meal.
The Osso Buco was also a generous serving on a platter of saffron rice and chunks of tender meat surrounding a tall, marrow-filled shank bone topped with marrow fork (for spreading the marrow onto bread). This and all dishes at Anthony’s were a colorful presentation including sprigs of greens. The Tilapia was grilled to perfection, presented beautifully and a generous serving. There was not any left to take home!
During the meal, we were delighted to hear piano music (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) from the piano at the rear of the dining area. It was fun to identify the melodies and remember some of the words. The pianist also took requests.
Italian desserts, especially those made on the premises, are extra special. We enjoyed a rich rum cake and an apple tart at $5 each.
This is a family restaurant with first-rate service to go along with first-rate food. It is also a perfect place for catered affairs.
