The victim, described by police as a 65-year-old Asian woman who was not carrying identification, was rushed to Queens Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead, authorities said. Her identity had not been released because police had not been able to notify her family as of Friday.
The driver of the van, Jose Cunin-Calle, 22, of Corona, was arrested nearby and charged with driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.
The accident occurred at about 8 a.m., police said, and the subsequent rescue and investigation efforts required police to close that block of the service road for several hours afterward. The victim's black shoe and hat were left in the middle of the road after she was taken to the hospital.
