Women’s group raises $15K for China earthquake relief

The New York United Women’s Association (NYUWA), a nonprofit organization based in Rego Park, Queens, organized a fundraiser in Chinatown early this week, which raised more than $15,000. The money was donated to the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY), which will help the victims affected by the earthquake in China.
Jean Lai Tong, president of NYUWA was pleased with the results of the efforts of the fundraiser that will be forwarded to the American Red Cross International Response Fund.
“This is just the beginning of our efforts to help,” she said. “We are honored to work with the American Red Cross to collect much needed funds. The Chinese community has confidence in the Red Cross and its ability to get help to the people who need it.”
Christophe Lobry-Boulanger, ARC/GNY’s volunteer program manager of international services who accepted the funds, was very grateful for the donation by the association.
“Many thanks to the dynamic women of the New York United Women Association for organizing this successful fundraiser to assist the people affected by the devastating earthquake,” he said.
Lobry-Boulanger added, “Community events like this demonstrate the power of the mission of the Red Cross to help people in need around the corner, around the nation and around the globe.”
The women’s association mainly focuses on promoting women’s rights, interests and equality and “whose members serve the community and celebrate their Chinese heritage and traditions,” according to a press release from the American Red Cross.
Locally, the American Red Cross provides aid and support to nine million people in areas including those in New York City and Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Sullivan counties. The organization helps in prevention and preparation for any emergencies by offering programs and salient information.
