Bayla Lyubarskaya, also known as Zina, of Flushing, passed away on June 9. She was 96 years old.
Born in what is now the Ukraine, Lyubarskaya was one of eight children.
She later lost a brother in World War II and bore witness to the murder of her mother by the Nazis, according to family members.
She had four children of her own when her husband died at age 42.
“She had to raise four children on her own in the Ukraine,” said her grandson, Steve Mikhlin.
Lyubarskaya came to the United States in 1981 and settled in Flushing where she helped to raise her grandchildren.
“She was a woman of incredible strength, resolve, and by far incredible loyalty to her family,” said Mikhlin. “One word that describes her really well is ‘sacrifice.’ She sacrificed her life for us. We have a pretty sizeable family, and she touched every one of us.”
Lyubarskaya is survived by a daughter and two sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Arrangements were handled by Sinai Chapels. Interment was at Beth David Cemetery.
