1,000 years of joy

September 7 is Grandparents Day, and nowhere was the event more celebrated than at Parker Jewish Institute, in the New Hyde Park section of Queens.
The independent 527-bed facility had a party for its residents, 10 of whom are more than 100 years old. In addition to birthday cake, treats included cotton candy and snow cones.
For entertainment they had a petting zoo, a clown on stilts and a magician. The fun spanned the generations with face painting and caricatures - the kids, parents, grandparents and great-grandparents had a wonderful day together.
The Sunday party was a special celebration for Carolyn Kaufman (center). It was her 103rd birthday. She received a Parker Centenarian Certificate from Dr. Richard Daines, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health (left) while surrounded by her loving family.
