Bet had strings attached

Children’s Librarian Susan Scatena has been making bets with kids at Queens Library at Whitestone for years, to challenge them to read books over the summer. This year’s bet got paid off on Thursday, September 4.
Queens Library has a long history of “putting it all on the line” in these challenges; this year the tables got turned on Scatena, when the kids put all the line on her - with numerous cans of “Silly String.”
Her 430 summer readers read a whopping 4,303 books this summer - 2,193 tomes were read by the boys and 2,110 titles were read by girls - for those who like keeping score.
“Miss Susan,” as she is affectionately known, is the Queen of Queens’ Summer Reading Stunts on the Library steps, while parents, staff, and many of her young customers look on.
In previous years, she has sat in a tub of Jello on the library steps, and read a bedtime story to a bunny then kissed it goodnight.
One wonders what she’ll propose next year - is she all washed up?
