Dinkins honored

On Tuesday, September 2, the City of New York renamed the base of the Promenade just outside the East Gate public entryway to the U.S. Open the “David Dinkins Circle.” The Circle, commemorating the 1964 World’s Fair, serves at the gateway through which most of the 700,000 annual visitors pass to attend the U.S. Open. Dinkins received the honor for his support of the Open over the years. He assisted the United States Tennis Association’s relocation of the tournament in 1978 from the private club setting of Forest Hills to its current home in a New York public park. Dinkins also arranged to re-route air traffic from neighboring LaGuardia during the tournament, and then developed the contract that kept the U.S. Open in New York City.
