The Long Island City man who died while helping his neighbor was laid to rest on Sunday, September 7.
Nicholas Nowillo was remembered as a “hero” by family and friends, who say that the 65-year-old Good Samaritan died after 43-year-old Eric Cherry allegedly beat him.
Nowillo had been escorting friend Michelle Koutsounelis to her car after she reportedly spotted Cherry in the area and became afraid.
Nowillo’s 11-year-old grandson called police, but Nowillo could not be saved.
Published reports have said that he suffered “seven broken ribs and massive body trauma.”
The cause of his death is still uncertain.
An attorney for Cherry, who is reportedly a homeless drug addict, have hinted that Nowillo was drunk at the time of his death, a claim that the family disputes.
Cherry is charged with assault, but further charges may be levied depending on the medical examiner’s results. He is currently being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.
