The new Volvo XC60 is the total package

So you’re in traffic, going no more than 20 miles per hour. Suddenly, you’re distracted and before you know it you’re about to crash into the car ahead of you.
With automakers estimating that 75 percent of accidents occur in slower-moving traffic in the city (between 0 and 20 miles per hour), the new Volvo XC60 crossover is debuting technology that can help reduce, if not avoid, these types of accidents, according to the car’s manufacturers.
City Safety, which is standard only on the new Volvo XC60, is the first of its kind laser-based technology that continuously monitors the area in front of the vehicle and can brake automatically. It is activated when the car is started and is designed to prevent collisions or mitigate damages in collisions occurring at speeds of 18 mph or less.
To demonstrate how the technology works, Karp Auto in Rockville Centre hosted a multi-media exhibit on Monday, October 27.
The first dealership on Long Island to do this, attendees were able to watch interactive videos, saw the unveiling of two XC60 models, and were even able to test drive one.
Barricades were set up, and drivers were instructed not to brake as they approached.
Donna Zuzzolo, Karp Operations Manager, did the test drive herself.
“The car stopped itself on a dime,” she said. “It gives the driver more time to react. It’s very impressive.”
Volvo, with its long history of innovations, effortlessly merges safety and luxury.
“It [the XC60] drives beautifully,” said Zuzzolo, who explained that the new model falls somewhere between the XC70 station wagon and the XC90 SUV.
A perfect car for everyone, the XC60, with leather and HD radio standard, offers dual booster seats in the rear for families with children, or dual heated seats, as well as a dual entertainment center, a panoramic moon roof that extends to the back, and plenty of cargo room.
Additionally, the rear seats can fold three different ways — thereby optimizing storage room.
Available in 10 different colors, the XC60 offers “smooth handling,” according to Tim Gilley, General Manager of Karp Auto, which includes Volvo, Buick and Saab dealerships.
“You get the comfort and ride of a sedan with the benefits of the height of a truck, and European styling,” said Gilley.
Karp Volvo is taking orders for the brand new XC60, which gets 18 miles per gallon city and 23 highway. Cars will be available in the showroom by March 2009.
Those who purchase before next March will receive a lifetime subscription to Sirius satellite radio. And the 2009 vehicles come with complimentary factory scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles.
Karp Auto, a family-run business for two generations, offers all clients personalized, one-on-one attention.
