We feel that Caroline Kennedy is the right choice for the United States Senate seat from New York being vacated by Hillary Clinton. Sure, she came out and toured the state - running for the office. Some anti-Kennedy critics called that arrogant, huffing, and puffing mightily. She continued her tour. She went on NY1 and she did it her way.
Pundits lined up to shake their fists in the air and shout that Caroline, daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, was politically inexperienced, intensely private and totally undeclared on most of the burning issues of the day.
Some said that she is disliked by the Clintons, which may or may not be true. She is very much liked by her powerful uncle, Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy. He wants his niece to join him in the same Senate chambers and do it her way.
On the plus side, the 51-year-old mother of three is an attorney and former head of the foundation that raised millions of dollars for New York City schools. The biggest plus is her iconic name, the mention of which reminds older Americans of that good place in United States politics - the age of Camelot.
However, we think her most important plus is that she was an early and steadfast supporter of President-elect Barack Obama. She made her choice and stuck by it - her way. It is, in fact, her relationship with the Obama camp that will help her to bring home the bacon for the state of New York. She is untainted by dirty politics and deals made in smoky rooms. She will be able to be a Senator her way.
We urge Governor David Paterson to choose Caroline Kennedy when he finally “calls it.”
New York State’s powerful legislative leader Sheldon Silver has pronounced in published reports that he will support Kennedy. Silver says he will even work for her election in two years. Paterson has sole authority to name Hillary Clinton’s replacement for the next two years but under state law, there would be an election to fill the last two years in 2010. We will be there too, advocating to allow Caroline Kennedy to do it her way.
