Presidents’ Day - open & closed

Monday, February 16, is a federal holiday - Presidents’ Day - in honor of George Washington (born on February 22) and Abraham Lincoln (born on February 12).
Washington’s Birthday had been a federal holiday since 1880; it was moved to the third Monday in February in 1971. Lincoln’s birthday never was a federal holiday, though it was an observed holiday in most states.
Most banks, federal and state office buildings are closed, except for emergency services. Post Offices are closed.
MTA buses and subways will run on a Saturday schedule. The Long Island Rail Road will operate on a holiday schedule; off-peak fares apply all day. Cars will be added on selected trains.
The city’s Department of Sanitation will not collect garbage or recycling on Monday. There will be no street cleaning on Presidents’ Day.
Residents who normally receive Monday garbage collection should place their trash out at curbside on Monday after 4 p.m. for pickup.
Those receiving Monday recycling collection will not have their recycling picked up until the following Monday, February 23. Alternate side parking restrictions are suspended on Presidents’ Day - meter rules and other parking restrictions are still in force. For more information about city services, call 3-1-1.
