106th having ‘good year so far’

The 106th Precinct has had a “good year so far in crime reduction,” according to Captain Joseph G. Courtesis.
At the most recent meeting of the Precinct Council on Wednesday, April 8, Courtesis honored “Cops of the Month” Sergeant Roxroy Bucknor and Police Officer Nicholas Nieve, who, on Tuesday, March 31, apprehended two suspects in connection with a burglary.
In the perps’ car were burglary tools – a crowbar, gloves – according to police.
One of the suspects had been on parole for a home invasion.
Along that vein, Courtesis informed the members of the community gathered that burglaries are up slightly in the precinct.
“One burglary is one burglary too many,” he said.
But Frank Dardani, President of the Community Council, commended the officers of the 106th for a job well done.
“I think they’re doing a great job, the community appreciates the hard work,” he said.
Dardani also complimented the cops on a good job with the Phagwah Parade on March 15.
Other issues brought up included one arrest and a few court summonses at a bodega on 115th Avenue and the Van Wyck Expressway after drug sales allegedly occurred.
Officers also got action on what was presumed to be a car club on Sutter Avenue.
The tenants of the location had until April 1 to cease and desist, said Lieutenant Joseph Salvato. Thereafter, he said, the NYPD and the Department of Buildings can padlock the location and it will become property of the City of New York.
And with the warmer weather beginning, officers addressed the issues of youth “hanging out” and graffiti – which Courtesis urged community members to report.
In fact, he said, the 106th and the Parks Department will have a joint meeting on gang graffiti to identify common “tags.”
“I think it will be quite successful,” said Courtesis.
As for noise complaints, Courtesis said his team will continue to try and reduce these, especially by working in conjunction with Community Board 10.
He said sound permits will be authorized until 7 p.m., no longer 9; the number of block parties permitted on one day will be limited; and the Conditions Team will more than likely be increased by three officers.
The 106th Precinct Community Council meets the second Wednesday of every month at 8 p.m. at the precinct. For more information, call 718-845-2211.
