LIJ ranked in top 50 hospitals for neurology

U.S. News and World Report ranked Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park, Long Island as one of the nation’s top 50 hospitals in neurology and neurosurgery.

“While we are happy for the recognition, we continually strive to achieve the best possible outcomes in patient care, service to our community, and innovations in education and research,” said Dr. Ronald Kanner, chairman of neurology at LIJ and North Shore University Hospital.

Kanner also attributed LIJ’s recognition to its research and treatment of neurological disorders such as epilepsy and stroke.

The rankings were determined based on factors such as reputation among board-certified specialists, mortality index, patient safety, nurse staffing, advanced technology and patient services. LIJ was ranked 46th out of 1,200 hospitals that have neurology and neurosurgery programs.

The department of neurology at LIJ and North Shore University Hospital has 21 full-time physicians, 70 voluntary physicians, 23 residents and fellows in training. The department also includes 11 full-time surgeons, more than 30 voluntary surgeons and 10 neurosurgery residents. The two departments combined have a full-time staff of more than 100.

Schneider Children’s Hospital, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, was also ranked by the magazine. Schneider was rated 20th in Diabetes & Endocrine Disorders, 27th in Digestive Disorders, 28th in Respiratory Disorders and 25th in Urology for children’s hospitals.

The standings were presented in US News’ “America’s Best Hospitals” issue, which is due out this week. The full list of top hospitals can be found at https://health.usnews.com/health/best-hospitals.
