The Woodside woman who spray-painted her tag on subway cars throughout Queens was sentenced last week to six months in jail, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Danielle Bremner, 27, pleaded guilty last month to second-degree criminal mischief for painting her identifying marks, “Erin” and “Dani,” on cars over the course of three years.
She was sentenced last Thursday by Judge Pauline Mullings to the jail stint and ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
“For someone who supposedly does graffiti for a living, the defendant could not read the writing on the wall,” Brown said in a statement. “New Yorkers are sick and tired of so-called graffiti ‘artists’ and their ego-driven vandalism of public property, which is a blight on the urban landscape and has cost taxpayers thousands of dollars to clean up.”
Bremner was arrested with her boyfriend last year after coming back from a European vacation, where they allegedly spray-painted several train cars, Brown said. Bremner also faced criminal charges in the Bronx and Manhattan. Her sentence in Queens covers all of those charges, the DA said.
Bremner spray-painted her tags and other markings on six subway cars between Sept. 30, 2005, and April 7, 2008, causing more than $6,000 in damage, Brown said. She twice tagged a No. 7 subway car at 111th Street and Roosevelt Avenue; a J line subway car at the 111th Street station; a No. 7 subway car at the Main Street station; an A line subway car at the Broad Channel station; and an F line subway car at the Parsons Boulevard station.
Police serving a search warrant at Bremner’s apartment in July 2008 found more than 450 spray cans, 50 latex gloves and 10 permanent markers as well as bottles of acid etch, grog ink and shoe polish with a dobber dispenser, a bolt cutter and a pair of pliers, the DA said.
Police also found Polaroid photographs of the tag “Dani”; 52 pieces of paper with graffiti drawings, including the tags “Dani” and “Erin”; and several digital photographs from her e-mail account depicting her tags on trains and one that shows her spray painting her tag on a non-city train, Brown said.
