Police have a suspect in custody following Saturday’s shooting in Sunnyside, where one man was killed and another left in serious condition.
Police are in the process of extraditing the suspect from Orlando back to New York. The department would not release the suspect’s name, saying the investigation is ongoing. However, he is the only person the police are looking for. His name will be released later this week.
The shooting took place at 9:00 am Saturday in front of 45-55 48th Street. Police dispatched a helicopter to search for the gunman who fled on foot.
The victims had a criminal history for selling drugs, police said. Edison Vera was identified as the man who was killed, while Miguel Llanos is in Elmhurst hospital recovering from gun shots to the torso and arm.
Vera’s wake was held at the Lynch Funeral Home on Tuesday. There was a police car outside.
The suspect has a history of drug offenses, police said.
The police said they were fortunate to be able to talk to three individuals with information at a nearby gas station and to find a blood-filled shirt at the cemetery.
This incident was the second murder in Sunnyside this year.
