On the stroke of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a bugler plays “Taps” at a Veterans Day ceremony in front of American Legion Post #103 in Douglaston.
That was the exact moment 89 years before, when the guns of World War I, “the war to end all wars,” fell silent. The day had been observed as “Armistice Day” in the U.S. from 1919, until the name was changed here to honor all veterans, in 1953.
Since November 11, 1918, U.S. forces have been deployed no less than 125 times, from massive efforts like World War II, Korea and Vietnam, to peace-keeping and evacuation missions all over the world.
Local clergy, friends and relatives joined veterans at the legion hall, at 42-28 235th Street, to honor all those who have worn the uniform. After the ceremony, the group gathered inside for refreshments and conversation.
