Blood drives

The New York Blood Center (NYBC) is calling on everyone who can to please take the time to donate blood. When blood supply decreases, emergency needs remain the same and it becomes more difficult to find precise blood matches for patients with blood cancers and rare anemia who are dependent upon transfusions of donated blood and platelets to stay alive.

Almost any healthy person over the age of 16 (under-17 need a parent’s note, over-76 need a doctor’s note) who weighs more than 110 pounds can give the gift of life. Bring photo ID. Here are some upcoming Blood Drives:

On Sunday, January 24 from 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at The Allen AME Cathedral banquet hall, 110-31 Merrick Boulevard in Jamaica.

On Sunday, January 24 from 8:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes School, 92-96 220th Street in Queens Village.

On Monday, January 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Time Warner Cable, 41-61 Kissena Boulevard in Flushing.

On Tuesday, January 26 from 11:45 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. at the 103rd Precinct, 168-02 91st Avenue in Jamaica.

To schedule your very own blood drive, please contact Karen Muscolino at 516-478-5038 or by email at Kmuscolino@nybloodcenter.org. You can save a life – while lying down.

High School to Art School

High School to Art School (HS2AS) is a visual arts portfolio development program offered by the Queens Council on the Arts that provides free, high quality arts training for high school students who are dedicated to applying to art schools, colleges, and universities.

Students are trained in fundamental drawing techniques and concepts, providing them with a deeper understanding of art as well as the ability to create artworks of their own. They visit artists’ studios, museums, and galleries to visually experience ideas learned in the classroom.

Interested high school juniors need to schedule an appointment and attend a brief interview at the Queens Museum of Art, located in the New York City Building in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park on Saturday, January 30, between noon and 5 p.m.

The interviews are by appointment and the student must bring a completed application and five drawings they have created from direct observation (no drawings from photographs). HS2AS is free to all students who are selected.

Visit www.queenscouncilarts.org for more information and to download an application form. Call Diana McClure at 347-505-3017 or by email dmcclure@queenscouncilarts.org to schedule an appointment.

At last

The roadway construction work on the Throgs Neck Bridge has been completed on the Bronx-bound lanes and is shifting to the Queens-bound side, according to the MTA. All the barriers and materials were scheduled to be moved by Thursday, January 21.

The onramp from the Cross Island Parkway will be a single, wider lane, with striped shoulders on either side and no merge on the bridge, which should reduce accidents and speed traffic flow, according to MTA spokesperson Joyce Mulvaney.
