QCC has new programs in Chinese, Spanish

As part of its strong commitment to community outreach, Queensborough Community College’s (QCC) Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development is launching both a Workforce Academy and a Chinese Institute for immigrant communities this spring.

The QCC Workforce Academy will offer as many as 40 certificate and professional programs. A Medical Office Biller Certificate and two new programs – a Home Health Aide Certificate program and Spanish GED – will be at the CUNY Center for Higher Education in Flushing,

The three offerings will complement current Continuing Education classes in Literacy, Port of Entry English as a Second Language (ESL) and a Hospitality Based ESL Workforce Development Initiative.

“These three allied health care programs support entry into hundreds of employment opportunities in Queens,” said Denise Ward, Assistant Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at Queensborough.

Additional courses offered at the Workforce Academy will include a Spanish GED and ESL Test Preparatory program for those seeking to obtain their high school diplomas through a New York State approved Spanish GED exam.

The Chinese Institute at the QCC campus in Bayside will be designed for adults from all backgrounds who are interested in exploring the language and culture of China.

In addition, the Chinese Academy, an ongoing program for children K-12, will continue this spring with classes in Mandarin Chinese, Chinese Writing, Chinese Conversation and cultural classes.

“For the first time, community colleges are recognized as playing a vital role in the economic recovery of our country,” said QCC President Eduardo J. Martí. “I am proud that we are providing a direct path to new careers and celebrating our culturally rich borough through these new Continuing Education programs.”

The Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development offers more than 500 courses for all ages in its mission, “To encourage Learning for a Lifetime.” More than 10,000 students enroll in programs each year, ranging from Professional Development, Preparatory Skills, Personal Enrichment, Recreation & Sports, Kids College, the 50+ Club, and much more.
