Recycling buyers will reap rewards

Queens residents will be rewarded for purchasing new Energy Star-rated appliances during a Presidents Week (February 12-21) rebate program.

Besides having new energy saving appliances, if the buyers can show documented proof that their old appliances were recycled – the rebate increases.

“As New Yorkers continue tightening their belts during this economic downturn, the thought of replacing outdated appliances can be daunting,” said Assemblymember Grace Meng. “This incentive helps New Yorkers save money while reducing the environmental impact of older appliances and decreasing New York’s overall energy consumption. My office will be providing applications during the week of February 12 to February 21.”

The rebates for refrigerators will be $75, or $105 with documented recycling of the old refrigerator. The rebate is $75 for clothes washers, $100 after recycling. It is $50 for freezers, $75 after recycling.

Dishwashers are only included in the program if it is in an approved three-appliance package that also includes a refrigerator and a clothes washer. The rebate will be $500, or $550 after recycling.

Recycling is made easy so that it is simpler to get the maximum rebate. Retailers will be expected to offer free recycling, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority is teaming up with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York City Department of Sanitation so consumers may go to their local landfill, waste station, or recycling center to recycle their old appliances.

Funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will allow more than 170,000 rebates, totaling about $16.8 million.
