Boys Basketball
In what was billed as a potential preview of the CHSAA championship, Christ the King delivered a super drubbing of Rice on Super Bowl Sunday in Middle Village. The Royals led by as many as 28 points in the second half, and despite a late-game rally by Rice, held on for a 60-52 victory in front of such luminaries as Walt Frazier and the Knicks City Dancers. T.J. Curry and Maurice Barrow each had 15 points for the Royals, while Jermaine Sanders dropped 20 for Rice.
Women’s Basketball
Queens College lost its fourth straight, falling to St. Thomas Aquinas, 65-64, on Saturday, February 6. Knights’ guard Christine Harnischfeger scored 23 points and helped her team battle back from an 18-point second half deficit, giving them the lead with a pair of free throws with 14 ticks left on the clock. However, Aquinas scored a go-ahead lay up with five seconds to play. The Knights are 4-17 overall, and have not won since a January 20 victory against Dowling.
Girls Basketball
Christ the King’s Ariel Edwards scored 16 points and grabbed 17 rebounds, carrying her team to a 73-50 victory over Mary Louis on Saturday, February 6. The Penn State-bound forward’s domination secured the Brooklyn/Queens division title for the Royals, and gave them the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Catholic High Schools Athletic Association (CHSAA) Diocesan ‘AA’ playoffs.
Boys Swimming
Pool powerhouses Francis Lewis and Bayside were eliminated from the Public School Athletic League playoffs, in the quarterfinals at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn, on Tuesday, February 2. The Francis Lewis Patriots lost to Brooklyn Tech, 55-44, while Bayside bowed to No. 1 seeded Fort Hamilton, 56-46.
Girls Track
Molloy’s Kathleen Woods finished second in the 2,800-meter run at CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens Sectional indoor championships at the Armory on Sunday, February 7. Woods’ time of 10:16.04 helped the Stanners capture their fifth Diocesan crown in six years.
