Though less well-known than their Men’s counterpart, the Flushing YWCA actively works for the benefit of women and is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
On Tuesday, February 9, local women gathered for some Lunar New Year festivities at the Y, located at 42-07 Parsons Boulevard. After sharing traditions such as a meal of rice cake soup and songs, the ladies, some in traditional Korean attire, played Yut, a traditional board game using do, or sticks, in place of dice.
In addition to celebrating traditions, groups gather weekly for educational, recreational and wellness services and activities – part of YWCA of Queens’ goals to acculturate and provide ways for women, especially seniors, to live healthy, balanced lives.
Upcoming event include the 13th Annual New York Music Competition for the Young Artists, from Monday, March 29 through Thursday, April 1, and the 32nd Annual YWCA of Queens Gala on Thursday, April 29 at Dae Dong Manor 150-24 Northern Boulevard in Flushing.
