Kiwanis club members honored

Twenty-one members of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale were honored with Everyday Heroes Awards by Assemblymember Michael G. Miller and City Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley for their hard work and dedication to helping the community.

“These people have put their own time aside in order to make our community a better place," said Miller, on Thursday, May 19, at the Peter Cardella Senior Citizen Center in Ridgewood. "It’s important to honor their hard work and dedication through these awards.”

Longtime members William Underhill and his wife Carrie were also awarded for their help within the organization.

“I’m celebrating my birthday here, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” said William.

Other honorees included:

Carlos Canalis, a teacher at a local high school, awarded for his work and dedication to helping young men as a guidance counselor.

Al Gibson was awarded for his hard work in founding and providing the Aktion Club for people with disabilities.

Lisa Fernano, a Ridgewood native, was awarded for her work in classroom makeovers and remodeling hundreds of schools in Brooklyn.

Peggy O’Kane awarded for her work in aiding anti-graffiti programs for the betterment of the community.

Jon Kablack, of G-COP [Glendale Civilian Observation Patrol], was awarded for his dedicated service in night patrols for the protection of the community.
