For most kids, just hearing the words “back to school” can have them running for the hills. Likewise, for a lot of parents, the words “back-to-school shopping” can have the same effect. It’s a debate as enduring as classic styles: kids want to sport fashionable styles and stay on trend, while parents want to stay on budget.
Luckily for both parties, there are a ton of designers out there now making ultra cool kids’ clothing at affordable prices. But in the ever-changing world of fashion (not to mention the ever-changing minds of teens), it’s easy to get carried away. So how do you decipher what to buy and what to by-pass? Consider this a cheat sheet for the stylishly hip looking to show off their fashion IQs this fall.
For starters, denim. It is, was and will forever be the fabric of choice for kids, tweens and teens alike. This back-to-school season will be no different, as we’re seeing all types of new “it” denim flooding the jean pool. Skinny jeans and jeggings will continue to reign in popularity for girls, but we’ll also see the addition of denim jackets, dresses and shirts making their way onto the scene. The fellas will hang tough in their jeans, as well, sporting all sorts of styles from skinny jeans to baggy jeans, black jeans to distressed jeans and just about everything in between.
Rock ‘n Roll cool seems to be an overriding theme this fall as fashions that have clearly taken their cues from the music scenes of yesteryear are popping up all over. Everywhere, ’80s glam rock elements such as leggings, ultra bright colors in bold patterns like stripes and leopard prints – even tutus (a la Madonna) – are back. The punk rock revival is also evident as plaid is EVERYWHERE. Pair it with this season’s must-have cropped leather jacket and you’ll be ready to rock the streets of London. Even the ’90s grunge look is making a comeback. Military-inspired jackets, shirts and cargos worn with oversized, chunky knit sweaters and combat boots will surely bring out the teen spirit.
If the rock scene is a little too ruff ‘n tuff for your taste, fear not. Ultra girlie accents like ruffles, sequins and faux fur will certainly soften up any wardrobe. And guys with a more refined style can sport the prepster trend in blazers, cardigans and letterman jackets. Nordic style sweaters will also add a chic “après ski” look to the hallways for both boys and girls.
Don’t have a ton of money to drop on a new wardrobe? No problem. Adding in a few key accessories is the easiest and cheapest way to update your closet. Pick up some of this season’s must-have items, such as chunky scarves, hats, knee highs, textured tights, geek chic glasses or a cross body bag to keep your look fresh without breaking the bank.
