After school program to continue

Youngsters at the Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) after school program recently celebrated the start of another year of programming, which was in jeopardy due to city budget cuts.
On Tuesday, September 28, Councilmember Jimmy Van Bramer joined parents at P.S. 150’s Parent Teacher Association meeting to celebrate the continuation of funding for their after school program. The City Council, spearheaded by Van Bramer, was able to secure $295,000 in funding to keep the program at P.S. 150 open.
“After school programs provide an invaluable resource for our communities,” said Councilmember Van Bramer. “Continuing to fund the everyday programs that truly make a difference in our children’s lives is a top priority. I am so pleased that my colleagues and I in the New York City Council were able to secure the funding necessary to keep the doors wide open for the after school program at P.S. 150.”
More than 200 local students from kindergarten through sixth grade are involved in SCS’s after school program at P.S. 150. From Monday to Friday the after school program provides children with time to complete their homework and enjoy some fun extracurricular activities such as sports, martial arts, performing arts and science.
“We are grateful that Councilmember Van Bramer serves as a voice for the needs of the community,” said Judy Zangwill, SCS Executive Director. “I want to personally thank Jimmy, and all those who helped restore after-school funding, for their tireless commitment to protecting the best interests of children and families:”
