City makes push for public health

The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) has launched its annual “Take Care NY” public health outreach campaign focused on prevention and early detection of illnesses and chronic diseases affecting New Yorkers.

Throughout October, Elmhurst Hospital Center, Queens Hospital Center, Parsons Health Center, South Queens Multi-Service Center and Springfield Health Center in Jamaica will host screening and educational events addressing asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, HIV and prostate cancer. There will also be flu vaccinations, smoking cessation and child safety information at little or no cost.

With the start of flu season, hospitals will try to make the influenza vaccine available to all. This year’s vaccine also protects against H1N1, the swine flu virus that caused so much concern last year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all people aged 6 months and older should be vaccinated against influenza annually.

“Our mission with October’s Take Care NY campaign is to help save as many lives as we can," said HHC President Alan D. Aviles. "Unfortunately, too many people do not take the time to get screened or vaccinated. When identified in the early stages, life-threatening and chronic diseases are more readily treated and managed.”

Public hospitals are committed to disease prevention and community education and sponsor outreach efforts throughout the year to make the public aware of free or low cost mammograms, colonoscopies, immunizations and affordable preventive health care and treatment.

The health screenings and other HHC services are available all year-round to New Yorkers regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. Individuals without health insurance can receive help to apply for health insurance or learn how to access affordable healthcare services at HHC hospitals and clinics through HHC Options, a program where fees are based on family size and income.

New Yorkers can call 3-1-1 or visit www.nyc.gov/hhc for a complete list of Take Care NY screening events at their nearest Queens public hospital or clinic.
