A Jamaica man was convicted last week in the 2008 stabbing of a man who died from his wounds two days after the attack, the Queens district attorney’s office said.
Aerris Grant, 31, of 88th Avenue, was scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 15 for his conviction on second-degree murder, DA Richard Brown said. A jury of four men and eight women delivered the verdict Dec. 1 following a two-week trial and Brown said their ruling was justified.
“The senseless death of this young man cried out for justice and the jury’s response proved swift and certain — returning a verdict of guilty to second-degree murder after just 60 minutes of deliberation. Their decision ensures that the defendant will spend virtually the rest of his life behind bars,” he said in a statement.
On June 11, 2008, around 11:25 p.m., Grant stabbed Dorrion Sweeney, 20, once in the torso near 173rd Street and Hillside Avenue, the DA said. Sweeney, who had injuries to his pancreas, stomach and liver, was able to make it back to his home where he called an ambulance and was taken to an undisclosed hospital, according to Brown.
Two days later, he succumbed to his injuries, Brown said.
Grant faces up to 25 years to life in prison for his conviction, the DA said.
