Peter Koo donates council salary

Councilmember Peter Koo lived up to a 2009 campaign pledge recently by donating his entire City Council salary to a plethora of local community groups, centers and programs. Ten local organizations which include the Queens Botanical Garden Society, Inc., Asian American Arts Alliance and Help without Borders were issued $2,000 each during a recent press conference at the Councilmember’s district office in Flushing. According to Koo’s spokesperson, James McClelland, “This is nothing new for [Peter Koo].”
“He knew that the current budget would be problematic and some groups my not receive proper funding,” said McClelland. “He’s been fortunate and wanted to give back.”
Koo, who owns five pharmacies in Flushing and is the chief executive officer and president of the Starside Pharmacy chain, committed to donating his $112,500 salary on October 25, 2009 during a campaign rally. He has stated that he will continue to donate his salary during his tenure in the City Council.
“I have visited many senior centers, schools, and community groups where important programs are provided to residents,” said Koo. “Many have expressed their concern regarding budget cuts, limited funding and ability to survive during these difficult economic times. Therefore, it gives me great honor to donate my salary to help alleviate some of the financial burdens of many of our community organizations and assist them in keeping their important programs operational.”
Other programs and locations that will receive funding over the upcoming months include the Community Senior Center of Flushing, Latimer Garden Community Center, NY/NJ Korean Social Worker’s Association, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society and more.
“We’ve always acknowledged and greatly appreciate Mr. Koo for his unwavering support of the community in these tough economic times,” said Catherine Chao, community development officer at YWCA of Queens. “With the generosity of Councilman Koo, we’re able to help even more members attain a more promising life.”
