Food show host visits Ben’s Best

Ben’s Best Delicatessen in Rego Park has been serving up kosher favorites since 1945.

Jay Parker, the deli’s owner, was formerly a bond trader on Wall Street. After his late father, Benjamin Parker, sold the establishment, Jay took over to temporarily manage the deli. However, the sale fell through and Parker has been its owner ever since 1981.

Guy Fieri, host of “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” recently visited the deli to include them on his show. Calling the event a feather in his cap, Parker said that Fieri chose the deli because of their unique presence and offerings. Together, they created a specialty Drive-in Sandwich that is comprised of pastrami, brisket, steamed salami, fried onions, hot peppers and vinegar and oil.

The deli serves traditional kosher food of Polish and Russian origin, including stuffed cabbage, goulash and chicken fricassee. Looking back to relics when his father was in charge, “lung and stew” and unborn eggs were once part of their menu.

The deli is located on 96-40 Queens Boulevard. It is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. – Jano Tantongco
