Queens’ Pia Toscano safe on ‘Idol’

Howard Beach resident Pia Toscano made it through another week on "American Idol" and secured a spot in this summer’s ‘Idol’ tour.

The top 10 contestants from the show usually embark on a summer tour across the country — but this year it will be 11.

Contestant Casey Abrams received the least number of fan votes, but was saved from elimination this by the panel of judges.  Two people will now be eliminated during next week’s show.

The positive praise continued Toscano this week when the contestants sang hits from Motown

Toscano chose "All in Love is Fair" by Stevie Wonder, saying, "This song gets me."

Working with music producer Harvey Mason, Jr., Toscano said he really helped her make the song her own.

Jennifer Lopez again praised the performance calling it a "killer ballad" with "amazing vocals."

Randy Jackson agreed with Lopez calling Toscano phenomenal, but also suggested Toscano bring something a little different next week after three amazingly great ballads.

During the Wednesday, March 16 episode of the popular reality competition, contestants had to perform a song that came out the year they were born. Toscano, born in 1988, sang Whitney Houston’s “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.”

As with her previous performances, all three judges had good things to say to Toscano.

“You’re why this show is called ‘American Idol’,” said Steven Tyler, explaining that she took a song, performed it in her own special way and nailed it.

Lopez, who was happy to hear Toscano sing an up tempo number, thought that the song was the perfect choice.

“And you definitely have an angel watching over you,” Lopez said. “You’re perfect every time you get up there [on stage].”

Jackson thought that Toscano’s performances were sending a strong message to her fellow contestants.

“Every week you’re producing amazing vocals, so you know what that says to every other contestant on this show?” Jackson asked. “Pia is in the competition to win it!”

Previously in the competition, Toscano sang “I’ll Stand By You” and “All By Myself.” Both performances received unanimous positive feedback from Tyler, Lopez and Jackson.

Toscano moved on to the next round following the Thursday, March 17 results show.
