Con Ed reduces voltage in parts of Queens

With another scorcher outdoors, many Queens residents are opting for the cooler temperatures of the indoors and their air conditioners.
Con Edison reported a year-long high in electric usage yesterday, with an all-time high possible today. Early this morning the company reduced voltage in Maspeth, Glendale, Ridgewood, Rego Park, Middle Village, Elmhurst and Woodside due to problems with electrical equipment. The affected areas include approximately 107,000 customers.
Brown outs are common when temperatures become stifling as millions of residents each turn on their air conditioners.
Con Ed is urging customers to conserve energy to help prevent any electrical outages. Energy saving tips include: turning off lights and appliances not being used, keeping windows and doors shut when the a.c. is on, running appliances such as ovens, washing machines, dryers and dishwashers in the early morning or late at night when it’s generally cooler.
