Vying for city softball championship

Third time might be the charm for a group of girls from southern Queens.
The Blue Angels, Ozone-Howard’s junior girls softball team, will take the field at the city championships on Friday, July 22 for the third year in a row – but this time, they’re looking to return home as champions.
“We’ve come very close,” said manager Joe Bode. “We actually won it two years ago, until an umpire overturned a call that cost us the game.”
Bode’s Blue Angels enter the city championship after winning their sixth straight district flag by defeating Ridgewood-Glendale-Middle Village-Maspeth, 14-5, earlier this month. The manager said that the district title is an honor, but what they are after is the city championship.
“This is a very special group of girls and its been a memorable six years,” he said, adding that the city title is the ultimate goal. “It’s every coach’s dream to have a group like this one. They are my extended family.”
