Water-on-the-Go stations sprouting up

For the second consecutive summer, New York City will provide free drinking water in different public outdoor locations in all five boroughs starting June 29 through Labor Day weekend.
Water-on-the-Go, administered by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), consists of 10 portable drinking stations. The stations will be connected and disconnected at the beginning and end of each day in order for a rotation of locations based on the summer schedule. The fountains will be connected to fire hydrants, each with six faucets, for direct drinking or water bottle filling. Separate water bowls will be provided for pets.
The stations will be set up six days a week, all days excluding Monday, every week this summer.
NYC is one of the only five cities allowed to run a largely unfiltered water system because the city has thorough watershed protection programs. DEP, manager of the entire city’s water supply, provides one billion gallons of water each day to more than nine million NYC residents.
“NYC water is simply the best,” said DEP Commissioner Cas Holloway. “Our Water-On-the-Go fountains make the healthiest, most affordable and most environmental-friendly drink available to New Yorkers for free.”
The water will be available at high traffic locations in order to cut back on the public’s purchases of water bottles or more expensive and less healthy drinks.
Along with other locations in the five boroughs, the fountains will be set up in Astoria Park, Flushing Meadows – Corona Park and the Greenmarket at Roosevelt Avenue and 103rd Street in Corona.
Water-on-the-Go is also available for private events that serve 500 people or more. For more information and specific dates go to www.nyc.gov/dep.
As Commissioner Holloway said, “When you need to cool off this summer, do it with NYC water.”
