MTA prepares for Hurricane Irene

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is not planning to be caught off-guard if and when Hurricane Irene hits New York City.

The MTA is coordinating with the Governor’s Office, Mayor’s Office and regional Offices of Emergency Management (OEM) in preparation for the hurricane’s impact on public transportation.

In a statement issued on August 25, an MTA spokesperson said the authority is “making arrangements to bring in extra personnel over the weekend, preparing our facilities and infrastructure by clearing drains, securing work sites against possible high winds, checking and fueling equipment, stocking supplies and establishing plans to move equipment and supplies away from low-lying areas as needed.”

Partial or full shutdown of MTA services is a possibility due to the severity of the wind and rain associated with hurricanes. The MTA is also prepared to implement evacuation plans if deemed necessary by the Mayor and Governor.

In order to aid commuters, Roadify, a free iPhone application, will provide subscribers with consistent updates on conditions and service outages on any line or route in the five boroughs.
