Toss out the Bad Apples

Governor Andrew Cuomo has formed a task force to examine the levels of executive and administrator compensation of not-for-profit organizations.
The formation of the state task force was precipitated by a recent article in The New York Times that exposed a pair of brothers who received close to $1 million to run a nonprofit organization for the developmentally disabled.
While we think there may have been some wrong doing, we have a problem with the task force – none of the members is an executive or administrator of a not-for-profit – they all come from government agencies. We feel there should have been voluntary non-profit agency members included on the panel.
Members of Cuomo’s task force will include: Commissioner Nirav R. Shah from the Department of Health, Office of Mental Health Commissioner Michael F. Hogan, Office for People with Developmental Disablities Commissioner Courtney Burke, New York State Inspector General Ellen Biben, Secretary of State Cesar A. Perales, Medicaid Inspector General Jim Cox and Superintendent of the Department of Financial Services Benjamin Lawsky.
We are concerned that because of this incident it will become all too easy to dismiss as corrupt the hard working people who care for the needs of their disabled clients and their families every day.
Just because there might have been two brothers allegedly abusing their compensation we say throw out the bad apples, don’t burn down the orchard.
