As CEO of the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center, J. R. Peter Nelson, Ph.D. grew the center from a $3 million business with one site in 1997, to the six site $27 million business it is today. In 2005, Nelson raised $8.5 million from donors to build a new 22,000 square foot state-of-the-art health center at 6200 Beach Channel Drive, in Arverne which received First Prize Award by the Queens Chamber of Commerce for Excellence in Design in 2006. Nelson built infrastructure to support a level of quality of primary care that has been recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) at the highest achievable level – Level 3. Additionally, the primary care has been recognized by the Federal Bureau of Primary Care and the New York State Department of Health Qualitywise Program as providing chronic disease management in the top 5 percent in New York State and the nation. Over the next two years the Joseph P. They currently serve 27,000 patients and 160,000 visits per year in 2011.
