MLS Wins 8th Straight Over GNYA
The wins keep coming for the JV Girls at Martin Luther School, as they recently defeated Greater New York Academy 48-15 for their eighth straight victory.
Freshman point guard Leslly Marmolejo continues to excel in her role as the point guard, scoring 21 points with 10 steals and five assists. Forward Toya Brown had a career high 17 rebounds and six points against Greater New York Academy.
The Lady Cougars dominated the game with their defense stealing the ball 24 times, as the MLS coaches have the team playing a very aggressive defense (averaging 20 steals a game while only allowing their opponents to score 21 points per game) and an up-tempo offense running the majority of their games (averaging 43 points per game).
The team consists of guards Marmolejo, Dominica Gallarraga and Jessica Rufle, small forwards Xena Andersen and Dana Azzar, forwards Brown, Dominique Bratton and Franchon Martinez, and center Katelyn Velez.
Men’s Basketball
Despite J.P. Arias’ triple double, the Martin Luther School Cougars lost 72-66 to higher-ranked Bay Ridge Prep in PSAA action on Dec 14.
The Cougars led at halftime 34- 29 but could not hold onto the lead in the third quarter as Bay Ridge went on a 12-0 run. However, MLS came back playing man-to-man defense and at the end of the third quarter cut the lead to five points.
The Cougars took a 63-61 lead in the fourth quarter with a little over four minutes to play but could not hold on against Bay Ridge, as they turned the ball over four times in a row at the end of the game.
Senior forward Arias had a triple scored 31 points with 11 assists and 11 rebounds. Akram Bahabishi added 14 points and five rebounds, while Patrick Kelly chipped in with 11 points, Johnny Ubiera and Austin Rothman each added four points and point guard Bryan Fonseca scored two points with eight assists.
Cougars have improved and are playing better basketball over the last three weeks.
