Civic -minded Women Feted at Ceremony

Koslowitz Praises Their Contributions

In recognition of Women’s History Month, City Council Member Karen Koslowitz recently held her first annual Women History Month Award ceremony honoring six women in the community recognized for their accomplishments in community service, sports, and philanthropy.

Honorees included an exemplary group of diverse women from 94 year old world traveler, researcher and philanthropist Bea Klier to 10-year competitive swimmer Lynne Wang.

Other honorees at the Mar. 28 ceremony included:

– Laraine Donohue, a longtime member of Community Board 4 who’s been actively involved in civic causes for over 40 years. She serves as a community liaison for the COMET Civilian Observation Patrol in the 110th Precinct.

– Gail Gordon, a member of the AIDS Center of Queens County for the past 20 years, member of Community Board 6 for nearly 30 years and the vice president of the 112th Precinct Community Council.

– Sylvia Hack, founder and president of the Kew Gardens Improvement Association and former chair of Community Board 9.

– Lydia Musheyev, president of Family Serenity and administrator of the social adult day care center in Forest Hills.

“Tonight we honor women who exemplify what true role models should be,” said Koslowitz, “whether excelling in sports, dedicating one’s live to community service, or advocating for a worthy cause, these individuals are making a real difference.”

Koslowitz also presented citations of honor to over a dozen essay and poster contest winners from local schools celebrating influential women leaders.

The event took place at the American Legion Continental Post 1424 in Forest Hills with over 100 people in attendance. Audience members enjoyed performances by the Gingerbread Players of St. Luke’s Church and an artwork gallery from the winner’s of the poster competition.
