Showcases Up And Coming Local Artists

In an effort to highlight what it calls “Queens’ newest art community,” The Queens Museum of Art (QMA) presents the Ridgewood Historic Art Crawl on Saturday, May 12 as part of its “Queens International 2012: Three Points Make a Triangle” biennial showcase of Queens artists.

The day begins at The Vander Ende-Onderdonk House at 1820 Flushing Ave. at 3 p.m., where residents can enjoy free hot dogs and beers, house tours and live music.

At the historic house, residents can grab their “passports” and proceed to one of several sites in the area. Those who get their passports “stamped” at all the sites will receive a free gift from the QMA at its afterparty, at Gottscheer Hall at 657 Fairview Ave., beginning at 6:30 p.m.

From 4-5 p.m., three of the artist working spaces at 1717 Troutman St. in Rudgewood open their doors:

– Bushwick Print Lab, #203-204: Locals can bring totes or tees (or anything else) and screenprint their own momentos of the event.

– Parallel Arts Space (Formerly Camel Arts Space), #220: “Alter Minimal: Worth A Thousand Words” is a visual presentation of projected images of additional works from the artists in the exhibit and their inspirations. Several of the artists will be on hand to answer questions about their work.

– Regina Rex, #329: Four paintings, four painters and four artist-curators hep explain how Regina Rex works?.

In addition, the building’s hallways will display a looped screening of video works from the Outpost Artists Resources/Cuts and Burns Residency Program.

Then, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., several more sites will be displaying art:

– At valentine, located at 464 Seneca Ave, artist Charles Yuen will be on hand at an exhibit of his paintings and video.

– At Michelle Jaffé Studio, at 852 Cypress Ave., residents are encouraged to put their heads into “Wappen Field,” an installation of 12 chromeplated steel helmets resembling Battlestar Galactica centurion faceguards. Each helmet’s dedicated speaker animates the room with vocals by Ayelet Rose Gottlieb.

– At Small Black Door, at 19-20 Palmetto St., the psychedelic group show Post Acid will hold its final performance.
